Today I was sad to read that the BBC is pulling the plug on its text service Ceefax. Long before the days of the Iphone or Internet this was the only way to have 24/7 information at your hands.
Pressing the ‘Text’ button on the remote control was like stepping into another world. Latest News, Sports, Entertainment and even games were free you could play them at anytime. Of my generation, who here admits that they have not used Subtitles to programmes?
There was always the issue of trying to find where the pause button was before it jumped to page 1 of 9 for the football scores. But above all Ceefax and its ITV counterpart “Oracle” were way ahead of their time.
