Camelot – Why the fans are left short

These last few weeks I have become rather hooked on a new TV series, Camelot.

It is an Irish/Canadian produced story of a young King Arthur and focuses on his rise from unknown boy to the young King, all watched under the careful supervision of Merlin.

The show is very different from the BBC production of Merlin, far more graphic, sex scenes and a deeper level of violence. There are standout performances from Eva Green, Claire Forlani and especially Joseph Fiennes as Merlin.

I am two episodes away from the end of series one so I goggled today to see when series two was due to begin. Much to my dismay I read that the series has been cancelled. They have cited “production challenges, predominantly scheduling conflicts with some members of the cast, including Joseph Fiennes, Jamie Campbell Bower and Eva Green.“

This angers me as any actor who signs up for a series with this amount of budget and production would surely be aware that there is likely to be a second series and could possibly re-schedule their workload in order to get around these problems.

What we are left with now is a half-finished series that I was starting to think could have become a cult classic. It was certainly the best series I have yet to see on TV based around the Arthurian legend.

As with many series, like Carnivale, it is always the fans who are left disappointed in the end.

Such a pity.
