Just what exactly do you expect from me?
To complete the failures of your destiny
You mapped out my life before I could walk
Taught me to scream before I could talk
My shoulders they carry the burden of hope
I want to fly free, not be shackled by rope
I must do this; I must be a straight A
How about me just doing my best, is that ok?
All of this pressure I need to let of some steam
Don’t strangle my mind before it can dream
Sometimes I maybe that little grey cloud
Yet I’ll always try hardest in making you proud
Not all can be the brightest star in the sky
Yet I am eternal light, because I do try
I walk down life’s path, destination unknown
I don’t need any hurdles until I have grown
Just be my side and support me with love
Be the sun in my life, not the rain from above
I cannot be who you want me to be
I need to find who I am, that much I see
This is my generation, we are who we are
Not bounded by past, or predicted afar
So I give you my word, I will make life my own
Once the roots of my life are finally sewn
Wow! What a beautiful poem! I can feel every phrase. I admire your talent!
But I really need your help. I’m from the Netherlands and I’ve wrote some English Lyrics / Songs. Because of a good friend who knows the English language very well, I began to doubt the grammar of one phrase in one of my songs.
And it happens to be the first phrase of this Poem :-/ . To be more precise it is: “What do you expect from me”. My friend says the grammar of this phrase is not right, he says it should be: “What is it you’re expecting from me” or “What do you expect of me”. I think my first written version is right, but I’m not sure. I don’t know where you’re from but I was wondering if you could help me clarify this. I want to use this song for my band, so I really want the grammer to be right. I would feel stupid if I would perform this song with my band and afterwards it appears to be wrong. I really hope you will send me a reply, because now I’m not using this song, and I hope I’m not being arrogant now but I believe this is a very good song, and I wrote it for another friend so… Hope you will contact me 🙂
Best regards,
Nancy
Hi
Thanks for the comment. They are actually both correct to use. If you use
“What is it you expect from me?” then it needs to be a question as in the poem above
It depends on what tense you use. Mine above is more the present tense so the question reads like I am shouting at someone, demanding an answer.
If you use “What is it you’re expecting from me?” then again it would be a question.
For a song I would keep it short. I would use “What is it you expect from me”
Hope that helps
Beautiful expression with such simple words. really loved it 🙂
This is really such a beautiful poem! Did you write it yourself? i wonder how long it would take to make such a wonderful poem. Simple yet just so outstanding! I love it a lot really! I hope you make more of this sort of poems! I would gladly read them again! >_<
Thanks Dhatri.
