Married With Children – An example of how a sitcom can be genius

Since I arrived in Sweden a few months back my mornings, though working, have been spent watching repeats of Married With Children.

This was a show that I began watching back in 1989 in the UK (mainly due to all my old school friends constantly going on about how hot “Kelly Bundy” was). Yet even then before I began writing my own work I could recognise that this was a sit-Com that was ground-breaking.

In the UK, we had our own sitcoms such as Bread and The Upper Hand also many of America’s most successful, Roseanne, The Golden Girls etc. Yet this sitcom was different in all ways. The identity of family life, the adult males recognition with Al Bundy or in my case the similarities with Bud. This was more than just a comedy show, it was a show where you grew up with the family and identified just how familiar life was with your own.

Though I have caught the odd re-run here and there on my travels it has been fantastic to see the show aired twice a day here on Channel 6 in Sweden and this morning marked the very last episode, one which I have never seen before.

So thank you Fox for the best comedy of all time, thank you Channel 6 for showing this twice daily and above all thanks to the cast, crew and writers for bringing a wonderful show to life.

Morning TV in Sweden will not be the same.
