Well another tournament over for Sweden. Last night the Swedish women’s football team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Japanese. A shame really as they had really played well throughout the tournament. They had already beaten the USA, and I thought that they would have raised their game against Japan. But that was not the case to be.
The team impressed me the last few weeks, but there was one star in particular who had made an impact, Josefine Oqvist.
Oqvist plays locally here in Linkoping and is rapidly becoming one of Sweden’s most feared players. Her speedy runs, timely tackles and thunderous shot have really made me think she is one of the best around right now. Certainly for me the standout player last night.
Women’s football has not really had much exposure, but it should do. The world cup has sold out every game, the standard has been excellent, and the games thrilling, to say the least. Also, some of the players make the overacting and overpriced men look rather static at times.
I have enjoyed the women’s world cup immensely and will certainly become a loyal fan of Linkoping and will be down to watch some games as soon as possible.
For now, I will leave you with some clips of the genius that is Josefine Oqvist!
