I read with interest today about a new 27 million pound visitor centre that is to open in Stonehenge.
Being a life long Pagan, I have always treated Stonehenge as an important area within Pagan/Druid history. Of course, it is one of just a handful of stone circles within the UK, yet none will ever match its significance or importance.
Since the decision in the late 70’s, to restrict access, there have been several instances of isolated trouble between the public and the police. None more than ”Battle of Beanfield” in 1985. I am happy for everyone to go to Stonehenge and enjoy its beauty and serenity. Yet I do get sad when there are those who, in the past, would attempt to use it as a place just to cause havoc and disturbance.
Donning a fake beard and robe does not make you a pagan, just like having a small statue of Buddha that you may have purchased at an airport make you a Buddhist.
Stonehenge has always been intriguing due to its sheer isolation. It’s surrounded by not much, and when I hear people I know who have visited there is always a sense of wonder and also disappointment.
In a lonely field stands a testament of time that captivates the minds of a technological generation.
The visitor centre, in my opinion, will be a great asset but only if it is run correctly. The aim of this centre would be to educate and inform rather than turn this into some form of a tourist trap. So many incredible places around the world have been subject to being overrun with cheap and tacky money making schemes that I really hope Stonehenge avoids being the same.
I will certainly be going after it opens and really looking forward to seeing decades of work come to fruition.
