Sometimes art confuses me

Art confuses me.

I read today that a painting by Mark Rothko (pictured below) was sold for a record $86.9 Million.

Now I am no art critic, but I look at this painting and just don’t get it. I have actually seen this painting five feet in front of me, and yes I still don’t understand it. To me its a square canvas painted Orange with hidden areas of red and yellow. Of course, it’s a beautiful painting but worth nearly $87 million?

I look at the works of Dali, Di Vinci, Rembrandt and Van Gogh and yes I can understand why these fetch the prices they do, but to my untrained and non artistic eye I don’t see anything that special here.

I am not one that only appreciates one period of art. Like any form, of creativity, it needs to evolve; otherwise we would all be looking at biblical cherubs for the rest of our days. I am an enormous fan of Dali, Pollock, Hirst and de Kooning and admire any artist whose work appeals to me.

However, for this one I’m afraid it just gone over my head.
