You know writing my latest screenplay has not been that difficult. In fact, for a change, it’s been something of a pleasure. Yet there is one area which has been hard to complete. An opening quote trying to capture the mood of the play in a few sentences. Now the quote is usually something well known, or by someone famous. Just seeing a name instantly captures the audience’s attention. A prime example is The Breakfast Club by the late John Hughes. Set in a High School in a fictional suburb of Chicago, Hughes wanted to set out to display the variety in characteristics of five teenagers and how they influence each other during a simple day’s detention. His opening quote was
“And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They’re quite aware
of what they’re going through”
– From David Bowie’s “Changes”
This instantly captures the mood for the film.
So here I am sitting down trying hard to capture a quote for “Gate 64”. Trying to find a quote similar to that of the Breakfast Club has been hard. Though the plots are entirely different, the focus is of four strangers becoming friends after a day being thrown together and their lives not being the same. So far the only decent quote I can use is one by Bruce Lee:
“Under the sky, under the heavens there is but one family. It just so happens that people are different.”
I will still look as the play is 5 weeks from going live but does anybody know of a better quote than this? Simply a quote on friends becoming strangers.
Did you mean strangers who become friends because the last line of your post says “friends becoming strangers.”
How about something like this: “Strangers are exciting, their mystery never ends. But, there’s nothing like looking at your own history in the faces of your friends.” by Ani Defranco, Amercian songwriter and poet.
Love it!!!!
