Listening to My Soul’s Refrain (Poem)

Listening to My Soul’s Refrain (Poem)

I gaze into the mirror

Looking at my empty reflection,

Unrecognised from who I am

The shadow of my rejection,

Words the form like rain clouds

Advice that builds a storm

They rain down into my confusion

Adding disruption to the norm

They tell me this, they tell me that

Yet nobody can clearly see

That your words just bounce off my soul

Like birdsong in my ears

Meanings rebound within my head

A kaleidoscope of messiness

Sentences so dead

What worked for you won’t work for me?

It’s not the same for every soul

I need to do this my way

Not a carriage out of control

Each path that leaves to wisdom

With “this and that” of gold

But in solitude my hope remains

Where my voice is self consoled

The people’s words of chatter

Sounds so poetic and so sweet

But guidance is what I seek just now

Where my soul and heart can meet

So in life’s vocal dance

Just let my heart beat in perfect sted

For the only word I’m listening to

Are the foundations within my head
