I had an interesting conversation with a friend on Skype yesterday. As were both approaching a milestone birthday we started to discuss if our beliefs in life and death have changed since we were young.
He’s been atheist all his life, I’ve been Pagan. I think that he respects Paganism a lot as it’s a way of life that isn’t ruled by any deity, there are no rules to live by and no religious buildings to go to. My friend has always been a sceptic. Has had no belief in the afterlife, just a belief that life is what we have and that after that it’s done.
This discussion was more one of him talking and me listening. He’s recently lost his mother, and his opinions of life after death have changed. He is still the same sceptical atheist as ever, but you can tell that the loss of a parent has made him question his own scepticism. Perhaps human nature makes us believe that there will be some kind of reunification when we lose those we love the most.
My own personal opinion I feel will never change. I do believe in the old fashioned pagan Summerland’s, a place that we will all meet again with those we have lost. Some may call it another place, but for me that is what I always believe in.
There are those that will argue that there is life after death, there will be those, like my friend, who will say that it is scientifically impossible. I guess that the only time we will know is in that moment itself. When the last breath of life has been extinguished from our lungs then whether there is life after or if it ends there, one thing remains constant.
We should not spend too much time worrying about what there may or may not be. Life itself is a gift that we should never waste for a single minute.
