If there is one period of the last century that encapsulates style and class it would be the 50’s and 60’s. The war was over the world was moving into a more technological phase and politics around the world was changing.
The music was also wonderful. Debonair men in sharp suits and hats singing, what would be labelled, as “swing”. There were many great singers of this period, Sammy Davis Jnr, Dean Martin and of course the stand out performer Frank Sinatra.
I remember listening to his music as a child. My parents would always put on the old LP’s and my dad would do his best to croon along with the greats, though the local dogs would join in with his chorus!
Over the years music changed but somehow swing always stayed in vogue. That was until the mid 2000’s. No matter where you looked it seemed that every male pop start was donning a black suit, tie undone and they would be singing along to Frank Sinatra songs. Each time you turned on the TV you would see reality music shows murdering classics. The style and message of the music had gone from classic easy listening greats to nothing more than reality Karaoke.
Of course, there were exceptions like Michael Buble and to a certain extent even Robbie Williams managed a good effort. So the other week, I found a singer, Brigitte Zarie, who just blew my mind. Her level of vocals, her timing and above all her delivery are, for me, the best I have heard in some 20 years of this genre.
I won’t go into any more detail as I think the videos below really speak the message.
Her official website is here.
Really worth taking a look!
